Solo Traveling to Honduras

As I started to prepare for my trip to Honduras, I began to wonder, as a woman traveling alone to a foreign country, are there things I should be doing to prepare that I would not normally do if I was traveling with others? I have traveled alone to a foreign country where I don't speak the language before, but this trip is different because I have somewhat of an unstructured schedule and free time to do as I please. I did a quick checklist run down. My passport was renewed recently so no problems there; I scanned a copy to be left at home with my itinerary. My jewelry was put into the safe and out came my long pants and hiking boots. Yet, these are all the same things I do when traveling with someone.
Being a planner by nature, here are some things I did prior to my departure as a solo traveler:
- Prearranged all my accommodations and domestic transportation within Honduras. I feel more comfortable knowing where I'm going to stay and that a boat or taxi will be waiting to pick me up at certain places.
- Prepared my arrival and departure into the country during the day. This way if I have to wait for my bus or taxi, it will still be light out and I can get my bearings.
- Packed clothing that is casual and conservative. I'm not in the market for unwanted attention.
When I arrive in Honduras, I will be sure to do the following to make myself and my visit comfortable:
- Make friends at my hotel. Even if it's just to say hello at dinner, traveling alone doesn't mean I have to be lonely.
- Use common sense. I'll walk along the beach to neighboring towns during the daylight and if I want to return for dinner, I'll do so in a taxi.
Since this trip is not for vacation, I do have set plans for most of the time I am traveling. But, if I were to do a solo vacation, there are tons of travel guides out there dedicated to the solo traveler.
